Many people have long regarded heavy metal as the cheesiest of all the metal styles (outside glam metal, naturally), and while that has varying degrees of truth to it I’ve always still had a profound love for the classic feel of heavy metal no matter if its performed “normally” or by the manliest leather-bound motorcyclists you’ve ever seen. With their debut, Biter keeps such a trend alive and they do a damn good job at honing their craft terrifically well.
Recreating the phenomenon of classic heavy metal is far from any great task and it certainly far from a rarity in today’s metal world, but it’s always had a bunch of bands not really bring anything to the table and thus every other attempt feels like a half-assed go at trying to sound like any great heavy metal band. In the case of Biter, I had my suspicions going into this debut given that I had nothing to go off of for this band other than this one record. Luckily, the 22-minute listen of “The Eyes of the Biter” is an absolute treat for the ears and a must listen for any committed fan of heavy metal. In several aspects, Biter nails the idea of bringing hook-filled riffs and a vintage sound to the table to allow for a classic experience the likes of which we’ve definitely seen pulled off much better, but “The Eyes of the Biter” is still an incredibly solid album no matter what angle you look at it from. Biter does a great job at bringing to life everything that made the style so entertaining from the shredding guitars, no fucks given attitude, fantastic energy, and tight leather that all comes together magnificently well for an album that’s surely a prelude to something very enticing.
For some styles, the classics never truly go out of style and it’s because of bands like Biter that we’re able to get so many different revisions of one of the original styles, and this act does nothing but justice for it. “The Eyes of the Biter” has loads of room for improvement, but there’s no denying Biter has done an exceptional job with this debut that will surely propel them into the future.
