A long track is something that will almost always grab my attention no matter the style simply because it’s a big undertaking to accomplish. Whether it’s in the realm of doom or something else, the mammoth task lies before whoever decides to go down that path. Psych-rock is rarely something that I get to see done in segments longer than 10 minutes, and seeing any sort of band attempt it is supremely intriguing, to say the least. With their latest offering, ElonMusk has performed just that with tasteful results.
It really hasn’t been since Black Space Riders’ album “Refugeeum” that I’ve found myself really stunned or flattened by any single piece of space rock that’s worth its own salt. With over 30 minutes poured into one song, I was really hoping that ElonMusk would defy my initial expectations and give us something that we can really sink our teeth into as we revisit its sound time and time again. In no small way, “…As Your Wanderer Taps At The Invisible Gate” delivers on just about every front. The instrumental factor makes this album all the more intriguing as there’s no guiding voice for anyone to latch onto in order to make it to the end in tip-top shape. Instead, ElonMusk just throws us out into the void and allow the instruments to change our very environment to craft a unique experience of slow burns, loud silence, and delightful riffage that all comes together beautifully to deliver us an incredibly lengthy slab of psychedelic rock that just keeps on giving with each passing minute. “…As Your Wanderer Taps At The Invisible Gate” has definitely overcome the odds of what an album like this normally faces upon its creation, and ElonMusk has made it work spectacularly as this entire work is entrancing in even its dullest moments to only be glorious in its apexes. It’s an extremely hard thing to pull off for any style, but ElonMusk has made the art of the stupid long song so good that it proves psych-rock should be doing it a lot more.
Such a feat like this is the exact sort of thing that I’m constantly on the lookout for because if you can pull it off even half-decently then you’ve done a great service to the concept, and ElonMusk has really done it justice here in full force. Everything about “…As Your Wanderer” oozes with talent and competence to a high degree, and I truly do hope ElonMusk continues with such quality even if it’s not as long as this work.
