Tiny Tree – Embolism

A good build-up is something that I will always appreciate no matter what style it comes in, and when it’s done exceptionally well it makes for something very special. When it comes into the realm of rock with even a little bit of psychedelia thrown in for good measure, it’s very rare we don’t find ourselves having a good time. Emerging forth from Tiny Tree’s latest effort, I would be lying if I told you that this duo pulled it off spectacularly.

Admittedly, the cover art for this album doesn’t really exude just how interesting this album is. It’s a very humble cover, and I can almost promise that once you dive into this album that you’ll be constantly guessing just where exactly Tiny Tree will take you solely because of how inviting the first track is even in its simplicity. And while I think plenty of these tracks could’ve been crammed together into just one continuous song and experience, “Embolism” never once fails to deliver in its incredibly slow build-up. Whether it comes in the form of subtle but expansive post-rock psychedelia that’s pulled off wondrously or the album-long build to the finale that could very well be considered noise rock in all of its aggressive nature that isn’t seen nor hinted at by anything that comes before it, and Tiny Tree makes the transition work fantastically! It all instantly comes together to make “Embolism” a greatly eclectic release that always keeps you guessing with loads of payoff to be had if you stay with them long enough for the reveal to blossom before you, and that’s always a great reward for any committed listener no matter what. Such a payoff is something that will always keep people coming back for more almost every single time, and Tiny Tree shows off their perfect understanding of that fact at every possible turn to great effect.

At first a seemingly passable release at best, “Embolism” quickly grows into something much more in every facet whether it be pure sound, quality, or variety across all of its tracks that all give us a real treat back to back to back. Tiny Tree has truly surpassed my expectations here, and if it’s not a sign for greatness in their future then I don’t know what is.
