Ensiferum – Thalassic

Of all the premier folk metal bands that we’ve gotten over the years, I can’t help but feel that Ensiferum has become one of the very best over the years with their efforts constantly showing off epic talent on many different scales. They’ve become a real powerhouse of quality since releasing “Unsung Heroes” as they’ve delivered so many smashing works time after time with each record having something more delicious than the last. Taking to the seas this time, it’s with “Thalassic” that Ensiferum only furthers their stupendous trend of excellence.

The only sad part about this record is, much like the last few albums from Ensiferum, there isn’t much fresh activity going on with the sound with there being not much of a difference if any to be seen in years. That’s only at face value, though, as any avid listener can really feel the energy change and evolution across albums that have absolutely made an impact with “Thalassic”. This is an incredibly diverse album that shows Ensiferum at their most versatile as they continuously show us why they’re at the top of the food chain for folk metal as a whole, and going from track to the next shows us just how well this band wields their style like an extremely deadly weapon that they’ve mastered over the years. Filled with maritime epics and top-tier folk quality, there’s virtually nothing about “Thalassic” that won’t at least tickle the fancy of most people who find themselves listening to its grand tales and unending fun trips across the sea that never cease to amaze, and Ensiferum knows exactly how to capitalize on the mind’s imagination and fascination of epics in such a way that it’s damn near impossible to turn away no matter how hard you may try. It all culminates in a fantastic record that holds nothing back and continues the glorious name of Ensiferum in such fashion that is no less than absolutely amazing.

Every time Ensiferum releases something it proves to be some of the best material that all of folk metal can produce that year, and it’s no different this time. At every possible turn, “Thalassic” constantly shows its worth, staying power, and undeniable energy to reel in any unsuspecting listener for an experience that is nigh on entertaining no matter how new or old of a fan you are when it comes to folk metal.
