There are many albums to look forward to from many bands across the wide expanse of the vileness that is the metal underground, but few are have been as anticipated by plenty than a new effort from Eternal Rot. Their last effort made a much larger impact than I was expecting, but it is more than deserved once you here the ungodly mastery of death metal necromancy that can be found on “Cadaverine”, Eternal Rot’s first full-length just two years ago. Apparently, two years is long for some people but just long enough for this band to return from their creative tombs as it’s with this fresh offering that they’ve only furthered their mastery over death metal.
Despite the last album being an absolute marvel of unparalleled heaviness that raises the very corpses you walk over, it’s with “Putridarium” that Eternal Rot comes to us at their absolute heaviest thus far. It’s no less than absolutely captivating in every single form as we’re treated to the same slime-covered rot that many of us flocked towards before, and it’d be criminal to suggest that Eternal Rot has taken the lazy route and kept everything the exact same this time around. “Putridarium” feels slower in many spots that enable the record to feel somehow even more monolithic despite its unwavering presence that permeates every single second that the album throws our way, and it’s only by the cease of the unyielding strings, demonic voice, and bone-cracking drums that we get any sort of mercy until the next song starts hammering away. It’s close to the very epitome of what it means to have a reverence for the old school of the style while not getting wrapped up in trying to sound the exact same. Instead, Eternal Rot carves their own path of death and decay with absolute impunity as they crush all before them while wiping away the echoes of those that came before them so that way all anyone knows is the true glory of Eternal Rot and the horrific splendor that is “Putridarium” is all of its nastiness! The whole effort lurches forward with no concern for life, light, or any sort of mercy as the only truth in this world is blood and they express that through lumbering riffs, unquestionable power, and such greatness that it’s damn near impossible to turn yourself away from once you fall into its cavernous depths. In no small way, Eternal Rot has made a big jump with “Putridarium”, and, surely, it’s only going to get better from here.
It may only feel like Eternal Rot just hit us with “Cadaverine” just yesterday (to me, anyway), but it’s with the whole of “Putridarium” that it’s clear they made the absolute most out of such a short amount of time. The quality is simply staggering to say in the least and the simple fact that it’s overwhelming in virtually every aspect while still sounding like an Eternal Rot album shows us that this band truly is something else entirety, and “Putridarium” is just a small step in the band’s conquest for universal darkness.
