I would think it ought to go without saying that the modern state of psychedelic rock is thriving unlike ever before. Given the sheer variety of acts out there and the vast scope such talent has to work with at any given time, it’s a matter of ingenuity and vision that can separate those that offer us a mild visage of what the style can still become and those that wholly embrace what can still be had. Kanaan has been a stalwart entity of the latter with now a decade behind them, and it’s now with their eponymous effort that we see them once again reach stupendous heights.
When you’ve been on the cutting edge of psychedelic rock for a decade, it’s only natural that you would, at some point, become damn near ubiquitous and embody only the finest aspects of your sound with your own personality bleeding through in virtually every moment to make the work in question something that demands to be experienced. Kanaan has bene hard at work for the last ten years to develop an impressive catalog born out of a surprisingly consistent and effective work flow that has enabled them to become one of the sounds need-to-know acts. Now, with their self-titled record, Kanaan shows us just how far it has come. Four tracks spanning over forty minutes for an overwhelming display of otherworldly psychedelia that acts as one of the ultimate forms of escapism that the genre has produced in some time, Kanaan offers us what’s surely their most accomplished work to date. A gorgeously expansive experience that is loaded with hypnotic riffs, soothing soundscapes, and more than enough wonder and wanderlust to satiate even the most scrupulous critics of psychedelia. This is what it means to be champions of your sound of the highest order.
Kanaan has become a well-respected presence in the genre for many good reasons with time only deepening the band’s connection to this ever nebulous craft. These past ten years have served Kanaan immeasurably well with their sound aging like the finest of wine with this newest effort one of their most flavorful and tantalizing pieces thus far. The future is exceedingly bright for Kanaan so long as they maintain the momentum they’ve been so diligent to mold into such a rich form.
