Personal experience has been a critical part of every form of art ever since humanity first began creating. It’s something that still maintains immense gravitas whenever artists begin to craft their next work with personal trauma and near-death experiences something that has fueled many master works over the millennia with today being no different when it comes to delivering such magnificence in superb form. Metal has been no stranger to such circumstances with even the best of us succumbing to the tragedies of life with many, fortunately, overcoming. Domkraft was already a force to be experienced, but it’s now after its own personal terror that the act returns in superb form.
At some point, there comes the realization that a band doesn’t really need to proof anything else to show that they know precisely what they’re doing. For some it comes after a handful of efforts while others might take several years to prove such, but anomalies like Domkraft managed to do it out of the gate with every subsequent release only furthering the act’s immense talent and capacity to deliver only the highest quality of their style. In no small form, Domkraft has become a well-respected name because of their immense presence. Their fifth album, “Night Songs”, offers us a continuation of right where the band last left us, but it’s in digging through the album that we see something has changed within and throughout the act. These seven tracks are much of what we’ve come to expect from Domkraft with its psychedelic-laced heaviness offers us pristine visages of what it means to be transported to another realm that is constantly oppressing your spirit albeit irresistible at times, but it’s in the way that Domkraft carries itself where “Night Songs” becomes a different beast. Internalizing their suffering and allowing it to spill over into their work, this record shows us not only that Domkraft still very much has got what it takes to stand out amongst stiff competition but deliver an experience that is nigh on sublime from beginning to end but we get to see a more evocative and nebulous side of Domkraft that is ever so tantalizing to fall into time after time.
Domkraft has garnered a good reputation for many different reasons. Their brand of psychedelic doom has lived up to some of the highest standards that such a sound might challenge bands of all sorts, yet it is here yet again that we’re shown precisely why Domkraft has reached its deserved cult status and how determined and gifted of an act this is. There is much that could’ve turned for the worse as “Night Songs” was formed, but it’s through perseverance and delivering in the end that this record stands as another undeniable victory in Domkraft’s growing catalog of excellence.
