There are so many different bands across the vast reaches of the atmospheric black metal world that it’s likely impossible to keep track of them all much less know where all the good ones are. Fortunately, though, some tend to float up towards the top and get picked up by reputable labels that can then spread their names further as they deserve, and Battle Dagorath absolutely qualifies as such. Being a name to know in the style for over a decade now, the act has rarely disappointed and it’s with their sixth full-length that they’ve returned with absolute glory yet again.

Despite taking their name from the coming of end times from Tolkien’s works, the cosmic themes of Battle Dagorath have never ceased to be interesting, and it really feels like it’s come to a peak here with “Abyss Horizons”. Lengthy songs are the name of the game here as Battle Dagorath truly didn’t skimp when it came to the runtime as just three songs make up over 45 minutes of the 73-minute runtime that’s filled to the brim with everything that has and ever will make atmospheric black metal something interesting to listen to in any scenario. If you want just an absolute plethora of goodies to sift through and find exactly what you’re looking for, “Abyss Horizons” absolutely has more than enough material for you to get your fill with whether it’s in the form of star-powered black metal intensity or ambiance that’s as mysterious as the void itself. It’s the very essence of an album that you can lose yourself in with Battle Dagorath knowing exactly the right moves at every time to make the most effective punch in such a way that it’s impossible to argue that it didn’t hit with maximum power and effectiveness. Quality may not be the name of the game as all times when Battle Dagorath is creating new albums, but it’s a clear component that got put it in this massive release where intensity, atmosphere, and epic cosmic energy took the main stage that shows us just how well put together “Abyss Horizons” is from beginning to end.

Should you have been looking for the next greatly executed piece of atmospheric black metal that you’ll be able to spend a shit ton of time with, you cannot go wrong with Battle Dagorath yet again. They went all out for this release to make it something that’s more than worthy of their legacy, and it’s by the end of “Abyss Horizons” that you’ll be left wanting to hear more.
