Depravity has long had a place along the very floor of the underground with throngs of bands attempting to achieve new levels of it year after year whether it be through occult madness or raw, unyielding catharsis that feels quite uncomfortable at times. In the right hands, depravity can become a true sight to behold in the best way possible with certain bands managing to achieve performances that feel just as voracious as they do layered in their unfathomable madness. Only having two releases to their name before this year, Persecutory could’ve easily been labelled as a name to be watched when it comes to growing madness as the very gates of hell crack open the sky with each release that this band dishes out, but it’s with the release of their brand new effort that there’s no other course of action we could possibly take for all that’s brought forth in this caustic, haunting performance of true insanity.
To go to the very extents of extremity is to lose some sort of conformity in your music with everything becoming gradually more accessible the more you allow your material to become a multi-layered creation of untold density that varies from the very definition of harrowing to unashamedly blasphemous in every category. Since their very beginnings, that’s been the creed of Persecutory’s craft. Never once have they compromise to make an experience that’s easy to digest, for the weak, or anything that can be used to relax with every given iota of their material being downright scathing and the literal definition of unrelenting to the point that you know damn well the hands of the musicians bled in the forming of this performance with that being an all but necessary sacrifice to make for the thick darkness that’s laid forth here. Even then, it’s hard to truly describe the madness that is their latest effort, “Summoning the Lawless Legions”, and walk away feeling as though you’ve encapsulated all that there is to suffer in these five tracks. There are loads of records out there that feel utterly evil right from the get-go, but it’s because of experiences like what we have here that the bar for truly achieving such biblical chaos continues to remain almost impossibly high with very few bands somehow managing to achieve such prayer-defying heights at virtually every turn. In no small way, Persecutory has proven themselves as such a name yet again with this unyielding effort of pure hellfire with even the first track more than enough to prove such. The remainder of “Summoning the Lawless Legions” is simply meant for the conquest and slavery of all that is good in this world, but nothing that isn’t made of darkness, madness, or unholiness in some form that can weather such a visceral listen.
It’s a real task to try and describe such a dense effort such as this with there being so many different ways to approach a dissect a record of this ilk that doesn’t hold anything back and feels very much along the lines of what it means to be truly, undeniably evil but that’s the one and only certifiable way to encapsulate what Persecutory has brought forth in this ungodly creation. There’s so much excellence to surrender yourself to within this creation of raw hell-make, and I can only suggest that any purveyor of the underground let the flames of “Summoning the Lawless Legions” wash over you should you ever hope to experience the very soundtrack to the End of Days with Persecutory all but the perfect vehicle to deliver such torturous glory.
