Serpent Corpse – Blood Sabbath

It’s no secret that the worlds of punk and death metal tend to overlap from time to time. Numerous bands over the decades have done quite a good job at showing us what all is possible when the two are brought together in tremendous form that is as competent as it is deadly with the effects of such efforts still regarded as legendary in many circles, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t further glory that can still be found if the right hands craft it. Plenty acts out there today manage to do quite a damn good job at keeping the sound alive, and there’s always room for newcomers to show us what they can bring to the table as well. A fresh name to the scene, Serpent Corpse makes it clear immediately that they’re a name to be respected.

With a demo the only thing that we’ve received from Serpent Corpse since their inception, a debut album like this comes with the fortune of being a blank slate for those of us unfamiliar with the name which would undoubtedly be the vast majority. They could have done anything and made any sort of mistakes or fumbles, and it would be completely understandable given it’s the band’s first big outing. However, failure was clearly not an option as Serpent Corpse knows not the definition of “half measures” as it is every given moment of “Blood Sabbath” that we see the Canadian trio rise to the occasion and do nothing but dominate! Nine tracks jam-packed with more than enough punk-driven energy that goes perfectly with the eviscerating death metal that’s on constant display, this is an album that the tenacious and ever-hungering death metal fan is constantly salivating for. Between the filthy riffs and pitch-perfect nastiness that quickly enables “Blood Sabbath” to become a true storm of blood, guts, bone, and madness the likes of which you could only ever truly find in the deepest recesses of the underground in which Serpent Corpse finds incredibly at home. Festering in every capacity and more than able to sear the flesh right off your bones, “Blood Sabbath” knows exactly what it wants to be, knows precisely how to deliver it, and is damn good at it every step of the way!

This is a debut that death metal bands can only ever hope for. From its tenacity to unbridled energies that keep you rooted in place, deeply invested, and constantly craving for more no matter what is thrown your way, “Blood Sabbath” has got practically all we could ask from such an unholy effort! The dead rise to the call of Serpent Corpse as their clear mastery over the style is virtually undeniable in every capacity as each track offers a blistering example of what it means to be an act that is not to be messed with right out of the fucking gate! These are just the first steps for a body dripping in bile and writhing from its grave, but Serpent Corpse has more than enough time to prove they are a behemoth that is to be feared the world over. Until then, the shadows and the earth are the solace for this creature until it is time once again for the pathetic light of day to see the horrors that are wrought when this creature bounds forth.
