An evolving band is not one that sits still for long. Much like names along the lines of Veilburner, it’s through constantly honing your track and trying new things, even if they’re only subtle, that you can reach new territory and challenge yourself to become more than what you or others would’ve expected from the onset. Despite having just put out their first creation last year, Aabode was rife with potential for expansion given their experimental nature. It was only up to time to see where they would take their out-of-the-box death metal next, and it’s now we have an answer quicker than what we normally expected.
It’s a real roll of the dice whenever a band uses with word “experimental” to describe their sound given that it can result in just about anything and everything happening with each band offering something unique that others do not. When Aabode came around last year, their industrial approach to death metal was very engaging and intrinsic in nature, and it’s in the time since that the act has spent their time well expanding their repertoire and showing us what they’re made of. Seven tracks of industrial madness with death metal born out of the chaos of the concrete jungle, “Neo-Age” is a dense and mind-bending listen that thrusts us into an urban hellscape where the very shadows seethe with forgotten terror and menace lurches around every given corner of such a meticulously crafted experience. Blending together industrial noise elements alongside death metal that is always shifting and ebbing alongside its setting, Aabode reaches a dark meditative state to bring this album together for a captivating listen that never once takes a singular, corporeal form that allows the work to become so easily to fall into but not easily escapable. This is experimental death metal taken to great lengths in such a form that lends greatly to its theme and setting in a level that is simply captivating to behold. Aabode may not have been around for long, but it’s with all that’s brought forth within “Neo-Age” that we see promise and potential unfurl in a supremely grotesque and
A swirling vortex that drags you into a crushing world of distorted riffs, hostile architecture, and the dead in the very streets of the city you foolishly call home, “Neo-Age” has a lot going for it should you simply allow the haunting light of flickering incandescent lights show you the way into the forgotten madness of the city’s verminous underbelly of rotting flesh.
