Sojourner – Gateways

The return of any band after a lengthy silence is almost always something that demands our attention. Such an event can be absolutely rife with potential of a sort that we just don’t see all that often, especially when such pieces come from names that have long established themselves as need-to-know. It’s only on rare occasions that we are treated to a sight as qualifying acts are often few and far between, but there are always a few poised to do so should they simply choose their moment. Already, 2026 has seen the return of sensational underground favorites like Downfall of Nur and Whispered, and now Sojourner joins that conversation. This year is already packed with greatness, and Sojourner is only adding to that grandeur with all they’ve delivered with their first creation in five years.

It was within a span of just five years that Sojourner arrived on the scene and managed to deliver three full-length albums and an EP. That’s a release schedule that moves at a significant pace without question, but behind the scenes it was clear that time was needed before the next steps were made for Sojourner. Having made themselves known as an integral part of their particular corner of the underground where folk and black metal take a turn to something more ethereal and mystical, this act more than earned a little bit of a rest, and that’s not even taking into consideration all the other acts its members are juggling at the same time. In six years, a lot can change and much has happened for Sojourner. From multiple line-up changes to returning to its original record label, Sojourner took its time to ensure that whenever they did emerge next, it would be with purpose and magnitude. For everything they’ve summoned throughout their fourth opus, “Gateways”, it’s made obvious time and time again that Sojourner has more than achieved that goal.

Ever since the beginning, Sojourner has always employed a special kind of magic into its work that ensures this brand of black-folk metal becomes far more than just that. Always taking the time to elevate their craft with melody, additional instruments, loads of atmosphere, different vocalists, something else entirely, or some combination of all that, Sojourner excels at creating an experience that’s as captivating as it is blissful to fall into even in the most somber of moments. With “Gateways”, they’ve utilized their well-earned break to offer their listeners something that feels mature, well-paced, hypnotic, and warm even when in times of ferocity. Whether it be through sublime riffs or a slow burn that sees you become increasingly enchanted by the raw magic that permeates the entire creation, each chapter of “Gateways” is a compelling treat that is a tremendous embodiment of what Sojourner has long been capable of with this record the natural next step in the band’s ongoing evolution.

This is a singularly gorgeous record that hurls you right into Sojourner’s rich fantasy world at a time of dusk, where the sun blooms exorbitant color and the memory of the day past lays heavy on the soul. Our deeds press intensely on the mind and soul and we are weary from all we’ve done and all that still lies before us. With a clenched fist to ensure no weakness, an open hand to guide us forward, and a bleeding heart to mourn the sad state of the world, Sojourner beckons us onward with their craft a truly captivating catalyst to help us persevere, rise once more, and venture forth into a world that’s full of sadness and malice yet one that’s still capable of wonder and majesty should we simply seek it out.

In a way, this album feels like returning home. Sojourner is rightfully a name that turns heads whenever they come around with new material, and so far, “Gateways” proves to be no different. The international act has proven its worth yet again to a tremendous degree with this record almost assuredly one of the very best of its kind that 2026 will throw our way. Should this world tear at your soul and claw at the confines of your mind, I urge you to investigate the shimmering brilliance of Sojourner.
