Where raw passion and talent intersect, anything can seem possible. In the vastness of the underground and all that it can offer therein, it’s no shock to see plenty of people across numerous acts strive to tap into their sounds in such a way that feels ingenious and downright captivating for everything that they can be. Yet, bands that are able to achieve that greatness are few and far between. Having been on the rise since their 2015 debut EP, Ireland’s Soothsayer has constantly proven itself to be an infernal force in the murky realms of sludgy doom. Five years since their last offering, it’s now that Soothsayer returns to us with an offering that stands as one of the most off-putting and unsettling creations of the genre that 2026 has put before me thus far.
Already, Soothsayer was anything but an act that hasn’t proven its worth many times over. Their particular breed of atmospheric sludgy doom has always been wielded to deadly effect, with the primal fury channeled brilliantly as Soothsayer carved its own path through the underground without mercy nor compromise. Yet, that has never stopped the Irish entity from digging deep and finding plenty of room to grow. With everything delivered throughout the forty-five minutes of “The Unbinding”, it’s made clear time and time again that Soothsayer did not just seek to challenge themselves but their listeners as well. This is an effort that truly knows how to get under your skin. Never once does Soothsayer trade in its signature power and ancient might for something that’s more accessible. Rather, “The Unbinding” sees Soothsayer go so far out of the way to not just unsettle the listener, but make it feel as though the world as we know it is being torn apart by some eldritch incantation that we can never hope to understand but it’s through the medium of Soothsayer that we are more than intimate with its titanic repercussions. It’s through a tremendous progression of their craft that Soothsayer accomplishes such monolithic vibrations that are downright cataclysmic. Unrestricted in their primeval force and downright captivating in their deep knowledge of the craft, Soothsayer remains as an entity that’s not to be taken lightly lest you become dust in the wind when they catch you unaware and unprepared.
Ireland has become an underdog when it comes to what it can offer the metal underground, and it’s alongside the likes of Coscradh that Soothsayer demonstrates to us the exact kind of might and ferocity that the island can throw down with everything about “The Unbinding” being nothing short of another tremendous addition to the growing discography of Soothsayer. Where terror and claustrophobic uncertainty taint the very air you breathe, it’s the dark spirit of “The Unbinding” that hungers for the very light of your soul.
