While searching for excellence, it can be all too easy to have something go right under your radar for any number of reasons. Whether it’s the sheer volume of releases that prevents you from noticing something or you simply forget to revisit a particular spot, it’s only inevitable that you’re going to miss something that would be utterly magnificent should you have simply come before it. I distinctly remember months ago seeing this very cover art and thinking to myself that I must come back around to it, yet I never did. I forgot. A damn shame, really, but that’s happened to me more times than I can ever truly know yet it’s an inescapable reality of any music lover. Fortunately for me, tonight brought me before Mientras las Abejas Duermen once more, and I am even more fortunate that I took the dive for this is work, to put it mildly, demands investigation.
Truly, the world of psychedelic rock does not seem to be letting up any time soon. We’ve seen some truly exceptional talent come from within the genre in recent years with acts new and old coming out of the woodwork to show us what mysteries and magic the sound can still offer to those brave enough to seek new horizons, and such adventures are nowhere near done so long as we continue to be graced with bands like Mientras las Abejas Duermen. Another band of the sort that sees the realms of psychedelia and heaviness intersect; it’s throughout their eponymous new album that this Spanish trio taps into something of a singularly exceptional sort with reality itself seeming to fold merely in the presence of Mientras las Abejas Duermen. This is the kind of psych rock that demands patience. To sit amidst an ethereal plane filled with color and personality, the whole of this record is kaleidoscopic of a sort that I can only compare to the works of The Re-Stoned. When these purple-tinged waters wash over your mind and body, it’s only then once you’ve fully surrendered yourself to the otherworldly rhythms that Mientras las Abejas Duermen snaps its fingers and you’re flung into an intensely dynamic realm that transports you into yet another different dimension. These planes of existence blend together seamlessly and beautifully to create an overall experience that isn’t just a reflection of merely one or two sides of what psychedelic rock can still be in the right hands, but a masterful demonstration of damn near every side of the genre.
At any given moment, there are plenty of names out in the unknowable landscape of psychedelic rock that are begging to be known on a wider scale. Mientras las Abejas Duermen is one of the names that absolutely deserves more attention with this record alone showcasing more talent and splendor than what many others demonstrate across their entire discography. Life itself is flipped upside-down throughout this release with the dynamics and captivating soundscapes quickly allowing you to become fully absorbed by irrefutable magnificence.
