Perpetually, we’re always on the look for the next band that can really surprise and confound us. Whether it’s a band that’s particularly good at their craft or one that manages to come around and subvert virtually all of our expectations, there’s always more than enough room in the underground for astonishment to still have an integral part in the experience. Adhering to that principle, it was with their first album three years ago that Februus laid the groundwork for significant expansion, and it’s with the arrival of their second opus that the Swedish act moves one step closer to seizing its destiny.
Already, the simple fact that Februus is helmed by just one person is already impressive enough with the sheer scope and scale of the music at large something that I cannot help but find bewildering. Given everything that the act has already achieved, it ought to go without saying that the name is already one that demands respect for the overwhelming craftsmanship and intricacy that’s to be found through virtually all of its works to date. “Construction of Conflict” quickly establishes itself as no different. While offering us more tracks alongside runtimes that are far more easily digestible, it must be made clear that the exploratory nature and intensity of Februus has not been hindered in the slightest. Across the entirety of these eight tracks that are downright schizophrenic at times, Februus offers us no less than an overwhelming deluge of progressive death metal that becomes truly disorienting when compacted into a five-minute song, rarely offering you a moment of reprieve to gather your senses. Yet, it all feels organic in nature even as the confines of our reality are assaulted in the name of exploring what all Februus is still capable of. Whereas many would begin to lose power or wane at some point, Februus remains consistent. There’s much to uncover throughout the madness that is “Construction of Conflict”, yet it’s against the odds that Februus manages to put together an experience that’s as enthralling as it is eviscerating from beginning to end.
Time is one of the ultimate determining factors when we go to figure out if a band has what it takes. All too easily can we be met with an entity that delivers intrigue on their first piece only to immediately fall off when they return for a second effort. Februus is anything but such a disappointment. This is progressive death metal at some of its most chaotic and unrelenting with nothing stopping Februus but its own imagination, and it’s clear throughout all of “Construction of Conflict” that imagination is something that this act has plenty of along with talent.
