Of all the trends that I’ve seen in the vastness of the underground and all that it has to offer, I am still very pleased to see the realm of funeral doom metal be expanded little by little at a relatively consistent rate. Whereas before we were relegated to but a handful of acts willing to go against the grain with their craft, it is now that we can bear witness to the rise of new bands in the sound at a rate that there’s always something to talk about. It was just the other day I came before Dromos, and now with the arrival of God Unknown and its debut, I know good and damn well the sound is in good hands.
Typically, funeral doom is something that takes its time across a marathon of time with the material consistently taking its sweet time with there always being loads of space between each note where tons of atmosphere can flow through. Yet, not everything is set in stone. Across the seven tracks of the debut from God Unknown, “Last Glimpse of Daylight”, we are only given twenty-seven minutes of material, but do not let that make you think this record skimps in any form! Loaded with experience that has been in the genre for quite some time, it’s made clear practically right out of the gate that God Unknown both already knows what it’s doing and how to deliver it all in such a form that is intoxicating to drown in. Everything about this record is pulled right from the foundational textbook of funeral doom metal with God Unknown having all the right knowledge in order to deliver all the right power in all the right places such that we’re given a profoundly evocative and intense experience that’s representative of the genre as a whole. Right from the beginning, “Last Glimpse of Daylight” offers us yet another testament to the glory of funeral doom with God Unknown the new name on the block that demands our attention right alongside contenders like Oromet.
This is just the beginning for God Unknown and what a mighty first step it is! This genre has seen tremendous growth in recent years much to my excitement, and it is no less than exhilarating to see a new name like this deliver material of this caliber out of the gate with its first piece. The runtime of this record seems disappointing at first, but the reality of “Last Glimpse of Daylight” is nothing short of a fantastic experience.
