For everything that can be even somewhat considered old school in terms of death metal, there are far more bands out there that claim to channel it with not nearly enough truly embodying it to the fullest. We’ve seen innumerable examples of bands coming out of the woodwork looking to add their names to the growing pile of old school wannabes, yet few can ever hope to truly ascertain the core ideals of the sound to great effect to the degree bands like Sorcery have showcased for years. Now, with their fifth album, these Swedes show us once again how it’s done in exemplary fashion.
In no uncertain terms, Sorcery is doing what they do best here. Throughout the absolute entirety of this performance, we’re given a precise vision of what old school death metal can and still should be when put in the hands of a band that wasn’t just there in the sound’s heyday but knows exactly how to perpetuate such a sound that doesn’t compromise nor dilute the original vision for any reason whatsoever. Pound for pound, “The Immaculate Sin” is the slab of unrelenting, unforgiving intensity that many of us immediately think of whenever death metal comes into our mind’s eye. This is a straightforward deliverance of madness and ferocity that death metal of this sort is all but known for! Between the onslaught of riffs, overwhelming presence, and undeniable energy that persists throughout the whole of the work, “The Immaculate Sin” quickly builds itself up as a bulwark of old school death metal the likes of which virtually every fan of the sound should be able to immediately get behind. Sorcery has long been a force to be reckoned with, especially after their return in 2009, but it is through their devotion to their sound that they’ve remained critically relevant to the conversation of what place old school death metal still has in the modern soundscape of the underground in the face of all its innovative explorations.
Even after so long, it is here that Sorcery more than cements itself as a presence that’s not to be underestimated. The wheel has been anything but reinvented with the release of this creation, but damn if it isn’t a wheel that still crushes to the maximum and knows what it’s doing with downright surgical precision! “The Immaculate Sin” is a true child of the underground with Sorcery the perfect vessel to bring such a vision to life and continue to show us what this particular and be in hands that are clearly more than capable.
