While I’ve always been a fan of bands that make their music larger than life in all the right proportions, there’s more than enough room still for those that keep things relatively mellow and deliver their music in such a way that is euphoric simply because it’s good at what it is. Stoner rock is real good for that kind of approach with all sorts of bands constantly coming around to make their voices heard in a scene that can be quite crowded. With their latest offering, Quinn’s Lizard shows us how it’s done with an execution that is nothing short of ultra-smooth.
One could easily make the argument that all too many bands in the realms of stoner rock are retreading over the same sonic territory over and over again to the exhaustion and boredom of many of its listeners, but I believe there is always something to be said for those that can bring their personal flavor and intrigue to the sound. Sure, works like what we see here with “Scales of Soundscapes” do anything but reinvent the style or take a sharp look at the very DNA of the music, but it needs to be said that a creation such as this revels in the simple fact of its own existence. Quinn’s Lizard offers us a euphoria the likes of which only a sound such as this can deliver in such a sublime form that makes your hairs stand on end but your shoulders fully relax with the wind never feeling so crisp. Between the riffs and excellent delivery of melodies that allow the album to take on a sense of liberations from the shackles of a mundane life, it’s obvious throughout the whole of “Scales of Soundscapes” that we’ve come before a band that more than understands what it means to truly embody stoner rock with the psychedelic influences coming and going, adding even more to the undertones of freedom that can be felt through each of these ten tracks.
Quinn’s Lizard didn’t need to do anything super special to allow this record to become the most that it could possibly be for it’s in damn near every given minute of this performance that we can find ourselves with the sun on ours back and the wind in our hair while this smooth excellence is the soundtrack to the good time we need ever so much. “Scales of Soundscapes” is anything but a revolutionary work, but Quinn’s Lizard has a damn good time performing it with that euphoria immediately translating to the listener’s experience in a way that is simply magnificent.
