Few things feel guaranteed in the vastness of the underground. There aren’t very many clear-cut rules that the many denizens tend to follow as everyone’s experience throughout the uncertain glory of the underground is something that has come to define the place since its earliest days, but as time has gone on, there are a handful of constants that we’ve come to reliable predict and thus rely on. In my experience, the constant output of the fierce entity that is Veilburner is one of those constants alongside the staggering creativity and intensity that’s brought in each of their offerings. In their upcoming ninth record, that trend continues in magnificent fashion.
Veilburner is nothing if not nightmares made manifest. Ever since discovering them, it has remained clear that this is an act that is not interested in playing by any sort of rules with anything and everything truly on the table whenever this band is crafting another album. Since their debut twelve years ago, Veilburner has remained astonishingly active with each record offering us another view into what this band can do to challenge both themselves and their listeners. For everything summoned throughout “All That Glimmers is Gloam”, it’s made clear out of the gate that they are not changing that approach any time soon with the results of this record downright terrifying to become lost within. This is arguably the most psychedelic that we’ve seen Veilburner yet as if they didn’t already adhere to their avant-garde side enough with each of these nine tracks simultaneously precisely the kind of insanity we’ve come to expect from the entity as well as a creation that always keeps us on our toes for we truly do not know what’s going to come next. The whole of “All That Glimmers is Gloam” is a terrifying experience that lives up to Veilburner’s reputation with the work absolutely doing more than just standing on its own two feet, but, also managing to show us just how many tricks Veilburner still has to offer despite being spectacularly active.
In a world that’s battling against AI, it’s always a refreshing sight to see an entity like Veilburner that has managed to defy the odds and keep us on the edges of our seats for years on end with creations like this always keeping us coming back for more time after time. “All That Glimmers is Gloam” is nothing if not a darkly psychedelic and transcendent aural experience that delivers on every front while leaving you stunned in confusion as to what’s before you yet you cannot help but venture further into the work for all that is offers is just too deviously sweet to resist.
