We could sit here and talk all day about how far death metal has come over the decades, and that’s absolutely a topic we should always be willing to talk about, but there’s just nothing that can compare to when a band manages to keep an original flame alight in such a way that feels as authentic as it is powerful. In particular, Swedish death metal is a vein of the sound that has remained relatively unchanged despite the passage of time, yet it is still fraught with great talent and possibility so long as the right band with the right mindset comes around. With their second record, Cryptorium more than proves itself to be such a band.
Despite only having been formed merely four years ago, Cryptorium has already made itself out to be an incredibly productive and energetic act that both demands our attention and commands our interest at virtually every turn. It was just two years ago they put out their well-received first full-length album with an EP following the next year, and it’s already they’ve prepared a second album for us to be eviscerated by. The pace is absolutely wild and more than enough to make one wonder if Cryptorium is allowing their material enough time in the oven such that everything properly cooks, but a mere glimpse as the intensity and madness of “Through the Bowels of Ceaseless Dissonance” should be all that one needs to conclude Cryptorium know what they’re doing, know how to deliver the goods, and take no shortcuts in ensuring their listeners are left devastated by the end of every track. This is Swedish death metal of the most pristine sort. Cryptorium are not taking any safe routes when it comes to performing their craft but, rather, steeping themselves in what has always made this sound such a treat since its earliest days. “Through the Bowels of Ceaseless Dissonance” is simplistic in the best possible ways with Cryptorium clearly knowing how to navigate the sound to allow what’s only their second album to grow into an intimidating presence that’s not to be underestimated.
With ripping chainsaws at the forefront of this obliterating display of madness and power the likes of which we’re always clamoring for, I think it’s safe to say that “Through the Bowels of Ceaseless Dissonance” is anything but a venture into insanity that we need less of. Cryptorium is already well on the path to success in the sound with everything they’ve already accomplished in hardly any time at all, and now we get to see if they manage to keep the momentum.
