I think it’s safe to say that atmospheric black metal has seen a lot of growth over the years, but it’s as the sound has become more populated that we find all too easily that there are plenty of bands that don’t seem to add anything new or interesting to the mix in any substantial form. Thus, when a band comes around with a sound that manages to intrigue, it’s hard not to take notice. Malist has been a name to respect for some time now, but it’s this newest effort that sees the act bloom into something extraordinary.
Since its debut in 2019, Malist has delivered unto us atmospheric black metal that seems to only become better with the gift of time, yet it is with everything summoned throughout “Eternal Echo of the Fall” that I cannot help but feel as though Malist has well and truly outdone itself. We’ve seen all sorts of acts come out of the woodwork to try and bring something to the table when it comes to atmospheric black metal, yet it is time after time that Malist continues to be a name that not only tantalizes the senses but manages to outperform the competition and show us the vast bounds of its capabilities. Everything has been leading up to this moment with “Eternal Echo of the Fall” almost surely the band’s crowning achievement. Intricate songwriting, beautiful atmospheres, compelling themes, and more than enough dramatic diversity between tracks that one cannot help but become utterly enamored by all that Malist pours into this creation without so much as a blemish to be seen at times. Whatever aspect of atmospheric black metal you came for, “Eternal Echo of the Fall” is sure to deliver on that front and then some!
We’ve been treated to some works of the genre that are more than deserving of being called beautiful and awe-inspiring, and that is more than fitting for what’s been accomplished here “Eternal Echo of the Fall” is nothing if not an overwhelmingly captivating experience that takes into account only the finest aspects of both this band’s well-honed sound and the genre as a whole. We’ve been treated to plenty of excellence from this act, and it’s still now that Malist’s trajectory seems to only skyrocket upwards.
