When you’ve had skin in the game for so long, it’s only natural at some point in some way that you begin to try different things and see truly what all you’re capable of. Twenty-five years is a hell of a long time to go without trying something new with bands like Cutterred Flesh refusing to stagnate for any reason with time only allowing such acts to show us what they can still be without compromising. Now, with their seventh record, Cutterred Flesh sought to show us unapologetically the vast breadth of their ferocious capacity.
Brutality is a fantastic thing in its own right, but it can oftentimes not mean much if you aren’t able to reign in elements of it all lest you end up with this wild mess than has no real form and doesn’t accomplish much apart from being loud. Cutterred Flesh has become quite masterful at directing its brand of intensity over the decades, and it’s slowly in more recent creations that they’ve begun to trim the meat of their vicious works and implement a progressive attitude to their sound with the results simply dazzling. Time has only shown us how competent Cutterred Flesh can be with such a turn, but it’s with “The Shapes of Hidden Malice” that we see to see in terrific detail just how efficient and unrelenting this act has become during such a metamorphosis. Never sitting still for long and always ensuring an air of unpredictability that’s further enhanced by the raw fury that’s always at play, these ten tracks are downright schizophrenic in nature and downright irresistible. Diabolical in spirit and no less than murderous in intent, the whole of “The Shapes of Hidden Malice” is what many bands strive to create even once in their time. This is what it means to transform your sound into something different but nonetheless wildly effective from beginning to end, and it simply must be made clear how deadly Cutterred Flesh has remained.
Twenty-five years is more than enough time for you to have earned the right to try something different, but there just aren’t many that can make such a transition as smoothly and efficiently like what we’ve gotten here from Cutterred Flesh. Whatever you do when you walk into this record, it’s paramount that you do not underestimate it. Should you do so, “The Shapes of Hidden Malice” are sure to rip you to shreds and disseminate your spirit across the forbidden planes of existence in no less than excruciating form.
