When taking into consideration the very future of heavy metal, it’s important to realize that while old legends may pass, their legacy lives on in the newer acts that are constantly proving themselves across all regions of the scene to show us they’re made of. Sure, there are plenty of instances where we’re left disappointed and left wanting more, but there are always those that manage to both do the genre justice and keep us coming back for more. Achieving each in no small form, it’s with their forthcoming EP that Kings Winter remains one of modern heavy metal’s best kept secrets.
I can understand how one could fall under the delusion that heavy metal has long been capped out when it comes to what the sound can still bring to the table, but I would implore anyone who doesn’t think so to realize that while much of the foundational bands will never be eclipsed, there are still loads of bands out there that are more than worthy of our attention. As one of the rising names that have been blessing the genre in recent years, Kings Winter has remained stalwart in their vision for the sound as well as acolytes of heavy metal the likes of which we would do well to heed for all that they’ve proven to be quite capable of. “The Century of the Self” may just be a collection of five new tracks and two studio recordings, but it’s in every way that this EP is indicative of what this band can still throw down. They’ve been on the rise for years, and it’s here that we find Kings Winter yet again impressing us with a clear understanding of what heavy metal is supposed to be in the right hands with all the tact and magic of the sound very much intact thanks to the passion that’s always at work behind Kings Winter.
They’ve never sought to reinvent heavy metal nor challenge our understanding of what the sound can be. Rather, it’s in adhering to the pillars of the genre and approaching it all with care, passion, and clear craftsmanship that “The Century of the Self”, much like its predecessors, rises above the competition. Demonstrating much of what this sound can still be in the best of hands, Kings Winter remains a name that more than earns our respect.
“The Century of the Self” releases on November 27th!
