Gateway (self-titled)

I wasn’t blown away by this debut, but I can honestly say that it is definitely a very nice album if I do say so myself. Gateway has created an album where death and doom metal mold seamlessly together even though the death metal overpowers the doom just a little bit to where it’s noticeable if you’re paying attention. By that I mean the tracks aren’t as slow or as long as traditional doom, but it still holds a slow enough tempo and a crushing beat to satisfy me in my need for quality doom. Then the vocals come in … Continue reading Gateway (self-titled)

Vacivus – Rite of Ascension

In terms of how raw and intense blackened death metal can get, Vacivus isn’t the most intense, but it is definitely up there. Their upcoming album “Rite of Ascension” contains 5 brutality well done track that sound as if they came straight from the void itself. The vocals have such a raw tone to them that it won’t take much for black and death metal fans to be drawn towards this album when it comes out. Even though I’m not big into the guitars of this EP, I can feel the power that is being unreleased through them and that’s … Continue reading Vacivus – Rite of Ascension

Nothing Lies Beyond – Fragile Reality

If recently you have ever thought to yourself “damn, I want a brand new band to put a debut album that is some kick ass melodic death metal” then you are in fucking luck as Nothing Lies Beyond’s upcoming debut album, “Fragile Reality”, fits those requirements perfectly! The vocals off of this have a real guttural sound to them while they still maintain a good amount of melody that had a fantastic feel that carried on for all 30+ minutes of “Fragile Reality”. In each track there were brutal guitars that had great hooks and riffs to them that would … Continue reading Nothing Lies Beyond – Fragile Reality

Never Again – Death Metal Tsunami

It’s always good to know that there are new bands out there doing their own things with the genres that we all know and love, and in this case Never Again has only strengthened my love for melodic death metal with their newest EP, “Death Metal Tsunami”. While I cannot understand a single word that the vocalist is saying at any time, they have a terrific sound that is both super intense and just filled with anger while still having that nice tinge of melody because melodic death metal. There are 3 songs in total off of this EP and … Continue reading Never Again – Death Metal Tsunami

Torchia – Ending Beginning

Of all the sub-genres of metal that there are, I’m probably the most familiar with death metal of all of them. Torchia sadly brought nothing all that new and fascinating as their debut EP, “Ending Beginning”, is a basic death metal album that is just that: death metal. The vocals are intense as you’d expect (not Cannibal Corpse intense), the guitars and bass are fast and heavy to really bring out the death metal, and the drums have a solid beat in all three tracks that aren’t very interesting to me but they earn my approval nonetheless. What would really … Continue reading Torchia – Ending Beginning

Whispered – Sakura Omen (single)

The one thing that I could never have seen coming no matter how much I thought about the possibility of it being a thing is melodic death metal mixed with epic metal that is heavily Japanese influenced. Now, that right there just sounds like a big fucking mess as a band trying to merge two cool things together to make each more badass and it would be too good to be true if it worked. Well, it does work and is too good to be true because Whispered have made a name for themselves along with their niche group of fans (of which I’m now … Continue reading Whispered – Sakura Omen (single)

Eye of Horus – Infernal Calling

Ah, melodic death metal; one of my favorite genres in the entire metal kingdom simply because it’s intense and has form to it that makes it a little bit catchier to me. Eye of Horus’ new album “Infernal Calling” is no exception to that rule. And like some other melo-death bands, Eye of Horus have chosen to not have as much melodic elements and focus more on the death metal which isn’t bad by any means at all. The guitars had a brutal crunch to them that you should expect from death metal and it’s delivered magnificently, and as you … Continue reading Eye of Horus – Infernal Calling

Nathyr – As the Legacy Unveils

There’s nothing quite like a folk metal album done in a unique way, if you ask me. The genre always manages to amaze me as different bands implement different instruments depending on its sound and/or if it’s influential from their culture, and in this case it’s the latter of the two. Nathyr’s debut album, “As the Legacy Unveils”, is an amalgamation of progressive, death, and folk metal that are all blended together amazingly without any one genre overpowering the other. “As the Legacy Unveils” is also representative of Nathyr’s Egyptian origins as the instruments used on the album are instruments … Continue reading Nathyr – As the Legacy Unveils

From the Hellmouth (self-titled)

If you’re looking for an old school death metal album that is raw and contains enough new flavor to make you head bang for joy, then From the Hellmouth is here to satiate such needs. Albeit this EP only has 5 songs to it, that is all it needs in order to bring some old school death metal that many people have been craving for ever since too many death metal bands became generic and losing the touch of the genre’s roots years ago. “From the Hellmouth” has got the deep and guttural vocals that are pretty much a necessity … Continue reading From the Hellmouth (self-titled)

Archaea – Catalyst

I’m not sure what it is with Gothenburg, Sweden producing amazing melodic death metal bands, but I can say that I’m not even getting close to bored with that place after it’s produced great bands like Despite and Chugger. And now, another such band has been added alongside them and that band is Archaea with their debut full length album, “Catalyst”, being the exact breath of fresh air that I needed as a melo-death fan while still remaining true to the traditional feel of the genre. The “fresh air” that I’m talking about is the fact that Archaea has a … Continue reading Archaea – Catalyst
