For all that has been accomplished since the digital era has come about thanks to the rise of places like Bandcamp, we’ve been going through a real golden age of the underground whether people are willing to admit it or not. In many instances, that means a real abundance of names out there that are to remain in obscurity with plenty finding their own niche audiences to always keep them coming back while others absolutely rocket through the depths to become sensations in their own rights. The list goes on for such names, and Spaceslug absolutely deserves a spot amongst them. Having been an act to keep a sharp eye on since its debut eight years ago, Spaceslug has been nothing if not constant in its quality. Now, with its fifth full-length album, Spaceslug returns from their longest silence in such a fashion that is only fitting for the name.
Time is oftentimes the greatest gift that a band can get as it seeks to hone its craft into something that can only be considered mastery. While there are absolutely instances of things cooking for too long and becoming a mere shadow of what it could have been, there are those that know precisely when to take things out of the oven to bring forth material that is ever so delicious. In that regard, Spaceslug are world class chefs. Their brand of psychedelic doom rock has never been anything to deny with “Out of Water” a simple reminder of that as if we needed any since we last heard from them three years ago. Armed to the teeth with five tracks that showcase the best of what has always made Spaceslug the powerhouse name that it has always been, this is a creation that is a more than welcome addition to the excellent discography that Spaceslug has been building for itself over the years. A trippy experience that combines loads and atmosphere and heaviness the likes of which many have strived to achieve with incredibly few able to deliver on the scale that Spaceslug has ascertained, there’s a reason why many still consider Spaceslug as one of the top names even after eight years. A pulsating creation that is nigh on intoxicating with all the nuances and flavors that we’ve come to expect out of this kind of otherworldly tantalizations, “Out of Water” is a welcome return from the Polish psychonauts.
After a three-year silence, anything was possible. Spaceslug could have gone in any direction they damn well pleased to really explore both their sound and what they’re capable of, yet it’s through perpetuating the particular craft that they’ve always been known for that their return is simply delectable to bear witness to. More than living up to their reputation, “Out of Water” brings us back home.
