To set yourself apart in a scene as stiff in competition as black metal is to truly go for something that not many others are doing at any given time. It’s something that an endless line of bands has sought to achieve in some form or another, but it’s for many different reasons that only a select few are able to even begin to tap into such potential. Having accomplished such a feat with their last album, Boarhammer poised itself to be a name to keep an eye on whenever they came back around. Fortunately, it hasn’t taken too terribly long for them to return with their third opus of contorted black metal of the magical realm.
When dealing with a band such as Boarhammer, it’s important to remember that black metal is undoubtedly at the core of all that’s going on throughout the performance but it is hardly the only genre that has great effect on everything that’s summoned forth by the time the album comes to a close. This duo has quickly made a name for itself thanks to its alchemical themes and otherworldly, psychedelic approach to black metal that not many others out there in the underground can deliver with such potency and fervor, yet it’s throughout their newest opus, “III: Instruments of Fungal Intent”, that Boarhammer is becoming quite masterful at delivering such splendor. Always keeping the listener on the edge of their seat with it being truly anybody’s guess as to precisely what’s going to come next, it’s throughout these eight mystical tracks that Boarhammer manages to lasso in great aspects of heavy metal, punk, psychedelia, and rock around an irrefutable shell of black metal while never once sacrificing melody, scope, nor mysterium in the pursuit of a performance that well and truly stands on its own two feet. Everything Boarhammer has been building has led them to this point, allowing their third work to become arugably the best and most mature work to date.
The ancient world in all of its capacity comes to life throughout “III: Instruments of Fungal Intent” with Boarhammer simply the perfect vessel to deliver such intensity as it’s through each minute of every track that we’re given something distinct and unique, quite unlike much of what else is out there in the underground.
