Ever are the boundaries of extreme metal being pushed. Whether you like it or not, there is always a long list of names toiling away in the density of the underground to not just find their own path but show us what all is still out there for us to become lost in. For every ten bands that try something different, despite how respectable plenty of these other creations might be in the name of raw creative integrity, there might be one that is onto something that people can really latch onto. Egregore is a name that’s still quite new for many of us, but it’s with their second offering that it should be a name that is more than fitting to be hailed as such a rarity.

To be outside of any given box is to already put yourself at a bit of a disadvantage since, oftentimes, there isn’t a blueprint that you can even begin to build off of. Many times, you simply must utilize your instincts and knowledge of music in general to guide your vision while you make damn sure to cement your artistic integrity. Plenty of times do we see such bold efforts fumble for one reason or another, but then we get creations like “It Echoes in the Wild” – unashamed, untamed, and downright unpredictable at times. What Egregore offers the listener throughout these ten writhing tracks is far more than a combination of black and death metal fumbling around in the dark for something new, but, rather, a tremendous step down a path rarely taken. Immediately, the listener is transported into a realm of sublime psychedelia that is both inviting and terrifying for what’s found inside is neither an easy listen nor something that you can easily leave behind. Wielding the riff as effectively as the unknowable nature of the whipping wind itself, “It Echoes in the Wild” captures the spirit of what it means to go against the grain without going so far as to alienate its own listeners in the name of simply making something different, and Egregore feels at home in its own madness.

From top to bottom, this is an experience that’s nigh on engrossing to become one with the sheer intensity that Egregore is constantly offering, and it’s a pleasure like few others to peel through the many layers of “It Echoes in the Wild” in order to uncover every single little morsel that the effort has to offer for those willing to explore its unknowable, cacophonous depths. Wicked in spirit, searing to the flesh, and amorphous in its aural magnificence, Egregore has a performance that is almost assuredly a need-to-know experience for any underground connoisseur.
