It’s all well and good to try and bring something larger than life into your performance, but at what point are you biting off more than you can chew? Such a thing varies greatly from one band to the next as each act is capable of different things, and death metal is no stranger to bands that do their best in going out of their way to offer something that’s truly bombastic from beginning to end. You never know when you’ll come before an act that actually manages to deliver such a spectacle. Tonight, I sat down to fall into what Goreworm had to offer with its second album, and there wasn’t much that could’ve prepared me for what lay within.

By all accounts, intensity is the name of the game when it comes to what death metal can bring to the table in whatever form it may come in, but such a thing means damn near nothing should the band in question not know how to properly focus and channel that intensity into something that we can really sink our teeth into. If there’s one thing that “Miasmic Solitude” has in heaps, it’s intensity, but it’s the sheer scale and diversity of that punishment that is to be truly admired as you wander ever further into the caustic whirlwind that Goreworm offers listeners through these ten unrelenting tracks, it is a surprisingly fluid creation that sees technical, melodic, and brutal death metal collide in such a way that feels cohesive and satisfying, “Miasmic Solitude” absolutely went for the throat with the results simply staggering from beginning to end. Highly evolved and even more calculated, this is an effort that demands closer inspection once the switch flips and you realize the magnitude of what Goreworm delivers. Great beasts dominate the landscape over which Goreworm holds complete dominion with their power, fury, and terror – the exact sort of madness that death metal of this sort warrants.

“Miasmic Solitude” is many things, but it is nothing if not a tremendous example of what it means to watch a band wield its vast repertoire with competency and absolute menace. Goreworm is still a relatively unknown name in the greater expanse of death metal, but it is with all that’s been summoned throughout this potent effort that the very name of Goreworm should be on the lips and in the nightmares of any and all who would consider themselves purveyors of what death metal can still become.
