I feel it would be a fantastic understatement to say that black metal is constantly flowing with new names looking to either make some sort of impact or simply add their voice to a grand cacophony that is not likely to be silenced any time soon. For those belonging to the latter, artistic expression is oftentimes the centerpiece for what drives such entities forward, and it ought to go without saying that we’re inundated with acts that attempt many things in the name of artistic expression with many lost in the murkiness thanks to the sometimes seemingly impenetrable nature of the underground. Sometimes, however, there are those that persevere and make themselves known in grand fashion. It has been an exceedingly busy 2026 for Grauwyler, and it’s here with the act’s fourth piece since the start of the year that we’re given a vision that many strive to bring to life in such exquisite form.
Just the sheer output that Grauwyler has experienced since its debut almost a year ago is something that should be respected. Not just for its pacing and breadth, but for how consistent Grauwyler has remained with the argument of “quantity over quality” not yet rearing its head in a bad way with this name. Atmospheric black metal has seen loads of oversaturation as the years have piled on, yet it is because of creations like “Spiritual Discernment” that we’re able to bear witness to the finest of what the sound still has to offer with talent of exceptional quality like Grauwyler. Consisting of two pieces spread out across over forty minutes with the title track taking up a staggering thirty-one of those minutes, “Spiritual Discernment” could’ve very easily been borrowing cues from sounds like doom in order to achieve its sound but it’s through a masterful understanding of this particular vein of black metal that Grauwyler succeeds without assistance from any foreign style. Allowing you to sit in the deeply evocative atmosphere that quickly wreathes the album in fog, it’s through drawn-out passages and a tremendous sense of dynamic scale that this performance effortlessly takes on a life of its own that is nigh on captivating.
Never content to sit in one place for long and always pushing the listener further into the crypt from which Grauwyler rose from within, the whole of “Spiritual Discernment” is something that you must sit with if you’re to truly understand it and to truly understand it is uncover a part of your soul you long hoped you closed off, but it’s through acute talent and focus that Grauwyler succeeds where few others can thrive like what we see here.
