When a band is able to stride forth with a sound that carries real weight and presence, great things can be summoned should that band know how to approach it all with tact, care, and passion the likes of which effortlessly brings such potential together. That’s a scenario we’re always seeking out whenever we comb the cavernous reaches of the metal underground. It can appear at any turn, but sometimes there are acts that come forth already having a foothold through previous creations yet come back to us to offer something that feels fresh, engaging, and precisely what we’re looking for. With their latest effort, Verdun embodies that to the highest order.
Immediately, Verdun’s name is one that a proper connoisseur of sludge-riddled excellence should already be quite familiar with. They’ve made quite a reputation for themselves for all the right reasons with an EP, a split, and two full-length albums to their name, but it is here with their third album, “Abyssal Womb”, that Verdun has carefully poised itself to dominate in such a way that leaves no survivors nor offers so much as a shred of mercy. Blackening their doomy sludge blend to allow the listener something darker and far more sinister, it’s the seven tracks of “Abyssal Womb” that we see the French act leave nothing on the table as the very cosmos itself is torn asunder by the might of this French quartet. Through every excruciating moment of this record, Verdun makes it abundantly clear that the grace of light has no place in this creation. Built off calculated intensity alongside a raw production that allows both the sublime rhythms and caustic passages to come together for an assault that is downright all-consuming, it’s from the get-go that “Abyssal Womb” projects a singularly fascinating sort of madness upon the listener without relent. Maintaining a mildly cosmic presence without ever once losing itself before such vast possibilities, Verdun takes one confident stride after another to make this creation fascinating while also promising nothing short of pure destruction for those caught before this piece unprepared.
All throughout, this performance is the darkest sort of intoxication. Verdun knew precisely how to approach this sound with more than enough ability to not only keep people interested but ensure that they always come crawling back for more, as this is the precise kind of madness that only the darkest reaches of the underground have any hope of delivering with Verdun most certainly an uncommon entity by all accounts.
