For everything that can ever hope to be brought to the table, a dichotomous work can easily be some of the most engaging and interesting of creations when it’s pulled off correctly. A constantly piece can offer listeners quite a lot, but not many bands are able to bring forward such intrigue with fewer still able to pull it off on just their debut album. That doesn’t stop those from trying, however. Thanks to bands like Void of Light, we get to see how such a feat is done in exemplary fashion.
Out of all the things that can make any album great, emotion is one of the undeniable driving factors that always come around to not just show us what can still be done when the right pieces are brought together, but it’s incredibly rare by all accounts. Without taking all the right measures into consideration, even a competent effort can fall apart into something that just quite doesn’t stack up to such high potential. Throughout all that’s offered in their first offering of “Asymmetries”, Void of Light offers us a surprisingly colorful blend that’s as cathartic as it is unapologetically intense. From the beginning, it’s made obvious that this is post-metal which not only stands out from the crowd in tremendous form but also manages to captivate, keeping you rooted in place damn near immediately. Hand-in-hand with fiercely tempered power, “Asymmetries” knows precisely what it’s doing in each step that Void of Light takes forward. Much like that of a terrific storm over the coast, this is a record that takes into account the intensity of an unyielding nature while simultaneously a gorgeous force that one wouldn’t dare to quench. This is post metal boiled down to its simplest but most effective aspects, and Void of Light looks damn good while doing so.
Debuts such as this are truly few and far in between. Where it might take several other acts many years to craft even one record that comes close to what we have here, somehow Void of Light pulls it off on their first full-length with the results simply magnificent. There’s much to uncover in the vastness of “Asymmetries”. One must only allow the tidal wave to wash over them completely.
