Intensity is one of the many things that have always made the underground such a treat to explore as there are well and truly no limits to what some visionaries can bring to life. However, just because you bring a lot of madness or power or menace to your performance, that does not equal an experience that is compelling. It still requires tact and finesse in order to deliver something that can grow to become something more than just a one-dimensional wall of sound. With their first album in seven years, Mylingar shows us how it’s done to terrifying effect.
After throwing down a monolithic trilogy and then disappearing, the anonymous act of Mylingar now sets forth once again with a new trilogy starting with “Út”, and what a start it is! Whereas many bands might succeed at delivering but one aspect of intensity to their mix to possibly decent effect, it is here throughout the absolute entirety of these seven tracks that Mylingar dug deep, left no stone unturned, and delivered unto us an overwhelming experience that is the definition of eviscerating. Anyone caught unaware before this creation is destined to be obliterated in an instant, scattered into an uncaring cosmos. Throughout “Út”, Mylingar breaks you down into your most base elements with the maelstrom of madness that the act commands constantly hurtling you to and fro in such a way that you cannot help but become enamored with the very thrashing that seeks to shed your blood. Injected into all this chaos is a distinctly nasty sense of melody that works its way deep into your brain without every really getting the spotlight throughout the record, allowing “Út” to take on a sinister and hypnotic layer that is always pulling you deeper and deeper into Mylingar’s unforgiving realm. From the beginning, it’s made obvious that Mylingar’s return is not something that we should be taking lightly with the ending of the record leaving you with a profound sense of existential dread of a sort that reverberates throughout your entire being even well after “Út” comes to a close.
This is a peak of madness and intensity the likes of which Mylingar should be incredibly proud of. I’ve already seen many people calling “Út” one of the best records of the year already, and I might be inclined to agree with them. Without a shred of mercy nor missing an opportunity to deliver unrelenting madness, Mylingar succeeds after a seven-year silence where many others fail after constant effort. Whatever is to come next in this trilogy has a lot to live up to if the magnitude of “Út” is to be replicated if not somehow surpassed.
