The weird and explorative are oftentimes the stuff that make the underground such a fascinating place to begin with. It’s where artistry does not need to compromise nor make any sort of adjustments in order to find an audience for which there are legions of listeners that are always digging to find something unexpected yet very much needed. Yet, there are those whose search for something unique is downright breathless and impressive for all that is sought out. It’s been six years since their last outing, but it is here with a new offering that Death. Void. Terror. returns to us showing us precisely how such artistry can still be done in tremendous form.
If you’re familiar with Death. Void. Terror., then you’re likely aware of the collective that they’re a part of: Jünger Tumilon, a collective of bands whose creative vision feels second to none with last year alone seeing the bombastic returns of both Arkhaaik and Arrows. Simply being a part of that collective is enough to put Death. Void. Terror. into a category of artist that few can ever achieve, and that’s without even taking into consideration the act’s two previous albums. However, it’s here with “The Great Monolith 2.5” that we’re given a tremendous distillation of both where the band is coming from and where they still have yet to go. Across the three tracks that adorn this EP, it’s made obvious time after time that Death. Void. Terror. is digging into something special to not only re-establish itself as a force not to be underestimated but show to anyone caught in their terrifying darkness that feels downright all-consuming while constantly being beyond addicting. The walls of reality are closing in as the transformative, hallucinatory nature of “The Great Monolith 2.5” grinds away at your mind is spiritually mutated. Between its dissonant riffs and unsettling atmospheres, the unique concoction that’s delivered throughout this record is nothing short of brilliance in an aural form uncompromised.
From top to bottom, the return of Death. Void. Terror. is nothing to take lightly. This is but a small stone in the path towards the eponymous Great Monolith whose grandeur and influence can be felt all throughout this performance. It’s the precursor for what’s to come supposedly not long after this work makes impact, but in no way is it anything to ignore or observe as a mere footnote. Rather, this is an offering that’s terrifying, compelling, and downright fascinating to watch unfold.
