Death metal, if nothing else, is an oppressive sound. Ever since the earliest concepts of the genre, it has remained a hostile realm where undeath, pestilence, torture, and other such plagues upon life itself have gained a foothold that has yet to weaken. But, like all styles in the vast realms of metal, there are those that seek to twist it into something truly diabolical where it can become quite hard to approach and turns into a certifiable challenge for the listener. Many attempt such madness with few able to really execute it in such a way that leaves the listener satisfied by such a formidable experience. With its fourth album, Acausal Intrusion delivers what few others can.
For the last five years now, Acausal Intrusion has been on an exploration of the damned and the decrepit the likes of which we’re lucky to see even once a year. Fortunately for us, this extremely busy duo, has found the time out of their busy schedules to really carve out a name for themselves that reflects not just their productivity but their raw talent. It’s been three years since the band’s last outing, their longest gap by far, and it’s within just the first few minutes of “Vomit Meditations” that it becomes clear exceedingly quick that the act’s return is not something that should be taken lightly nor ignored.
This is when death metal transmutes itself from an visceral beast dominated by a primal depravity to something that somehow takes things to an entirely new depth. Twisted and contorted in such a carnivorous and mildly psychedelic form, “Vomit Meditations” sees Acausal Intrusion channel something that feels like it should be locked away lest such an entity consume the very fabrics of reality. Impressive craftsmanship adorns the entirety of these six tracks with technicality and terror layered brilliantly throughout to show us how far Acausal Intrusion continues to push their sound as well as corrupt their listeners. “Vomit Meditations” is not just an outward expression of extreme passion, but an exploration into the macabre and obscene the likes of which can only be likened to that of a Clive Barker novella.
This isn’t just death metal. Rather, it’s death metal warped and further debauched into a form that takes cues from unpredictable jazz to the seductive realms of psychedelia to both seduce and entrance the listener to venture ever further into the halls of cacophonous wretches that “Vomit Meditations” was born out of. In every form, Acausal Intrusion sought to deprave and isolate the listener in a place that is far from forlorn of light, it’s a realm that devours all who come into contact with its writhing darkness.
In no small form, Acausal Intrusion was the perfect vessel to deliver such an exquisite vision with few still able to claim they can stand toe-to-toe with this rising entity that is slowly claiming chunks of the underground for its own. Eventually, everyone will cower before the act with all that it dares to summon forth.
