Dromos – Failing Light

Funeral doom is still very much a niche sound, but it’s as time has gone one that we’ve seen more names come to the sound at a relatively consistent rate, allowing us to see what it can still become now with more chefs throwing their own ingredients into that roiling cauldron. Recent acts like Oromet are continuously showing us what funeral doom can still be, and there’s still plenty of room to grow for those willing to submerge themselves in the dark reaches of this genre. With its first full-length album, Dromos does that in such a form that is incredibly indicative of the potential held by both the band and the sound itself.

When dealing with something like funeral doom, there are many elements that need to be taken into account lest you miss out on some of the finest aspects of what the genre has to offer. From its immensely slow pacing to haunting themes to its undeniable intensity that presses on both mind and body, funeral doom remains something that can easily slip through the fingers of those who don’t know how to properly channel it. After just a handful of minutes within the dreary atmospheres of “Failing Light”, it’s made clear that Dromos already has a tremendous concept of what they’re doing with the resulting creation absolutely something that purveyors of this challenging genre should definitely investigate. Dromos takes their time and builds up their creation that is handcrafted delicately to simply tear you down. The space between the notes hold great depths that one cannot help but become consumed by as “Failing Light” executes its vision damn near to perfection with Dromos knowing precisely how to navigate around the potential pitfalls of funeral doom with the end result resonating through one’s entire being, shaken to the very core.

Dromos is still very much a new name to the game by all accounts, but if they’re to venture further down this path to see where else they can take funeral doom and where funeral doom can take them then I cannot see anything less than glorious victory for Dromos when all is said and done. Whatever is to come next, “Failing Light” immediately proves that this is an act whose power and presence is not to be taken lightly.
