Even after well over 4,000 reviews over the course of over twelve years, there are still some albums that come before me that leave me well and truly stumped. Usually, it comes in the form of a creation that I wasn’t expecting in any form but can eventually peel apart, digest, and comb through in a way that leaves me satisfied in the end. Long has it been since I’ve had a creation drop in my lap and I simply do not know what to do with it. Mixed feelings aren’t oftentimes something that hinder me for too long, but there are always exceptions. It’s been years since I’ve had any sort of work confound me yet keep me crawling back for more like what Gaerea has accomplished with their latest album, “Loss”.
If you’ve been paying any sort of attention to the underground over the last ten years, Gaerea is a name you simply cannot have missed. The band’s cult status has only grown exponentially with each release, and it’s safe to say that the Portuguese act has been more than a little busy with now five full-length albums in eight years.
They were divisive in all the best ways, in my opinion. An embodiment of raw black metal that was then twisted and mutated in a way that feel uncompromisingly evocative, lips were smacking all across the underground whenever Gaerea came around with a new effort, mine included. The band’s power and vision always kept them at the forefront of many conversations even as each album saw Gaerea in a slightly different light as the act was always pushing itself to become something else if not something more.
Then came the early months of 2026 when it was announced that Gaerea signed with Century Media Records – an undeniable achievement. I commend a band that claws its way from the bottom, tries new things, and manages to find themselves with one of the biggest labels on the planet, yet it was from the impending singles and the eventual release of “Loss” that something become inexplicably clear: Gaerea had changed.
Do not get me wrong – I thoroughly enjoyed the experimentation that Gaerea took with its sound across its albums with efforts like “Coma” and “Mirage” showing the immense growth and sonic expansion that the band was daring enough to attempt and masterful enough to pull off. Yet, something about “Loss” just never really clicked with me at first.
This is the cleanest record from Gaerea to date, but I would find it to be an outright lie to suggest that Gaerea has fully lost its grit. The vocals are still there with the arrival of soaring cleans and a lot of melody something that I wasn’t expecting but I do thoroughly enjoy as it’s quite catchy at times. However, the raw unbridled ferocity that Gaerea became known for feels tuned down here at times, swapped out for something that feels more filled with light that seeks to raise the forlorn from the pits of despair.
There were plenty of solid elements that kept me coming back to “Loss”, but there was something that I felt as though fully prevented me from enjoying the record. So, I put the record on the back burner knowing damn well I wanted to review it but failed to find the words. I’ve seen as much praise for the record as I have those that find the record to be a disappointment. I will not partake in the subject to debate as to whether or not Gaerea has sold out as I have hope that “Loss” is purely the vision and natural evolution of Gaerea rather than an attempt to become more accessible to a wider audience. I agree with those that say this record is a massive step in a new direction for Gaerea yet I understand those that wish it was not so.
If this is to be the demonstration of a new trajectory for Gaerea then I applaud them for seeking something different for both themselves and their craft, but I cannot help but mourn the loss (no pun intended) of Gaerea as it was. Those early albums like “Unsettling Whispers” will always hold a place in my heart and listening habits, but that does not mean Gaerea should be relegated to the same sound in perpetuity until they run out of ideas and all the soul is siphoned out of their creations.
“Loss” is an undeniable triumph for Gaerea. It brings forth so much of what has made them a need-to-know name in the first place with their impeccable craftsmanship coming together brilliantly with their pitch-perfect emotional status that always knows how to cut deep. The dynamic songwriting that’s to be found across the absolute entirety of the record is stunning, filling the work with as much unyielding darkness as there is uplifting light. Gaerea pushes itself to try something new and bold that grabs your entirety being, plucks at your heartstrings, and roots you in place until that final echoing note of the piano fades away with the sheer magnitude of “Loss” reverberating in your skull and throughout your soul. We’re given a brand new perspective as to what this highly capable band can still bring to the table after multiple albums that challenged the listener with the end result of “Loss” something that the band should be immensely proud of.
This is a record that represents a true crossroads for Gaerea with truly anything being possible whenever the act goes to pen their sixth album. Whatever is to come next there are but a few assurances: it will be yet another divisive yet powerful work, something that pushes Gaerea even further into a different direction, and it will further cement Gaerea as one of the truly exceptional bands of the last decade.
