When you’ve been in the game for multiple decades, it’s only natural that you would undergo a metamorphosis in some form or another. Your core ideals and concepts may remain relatively unchanged, but it’s not often that we find ourselves before a band that refuses to change with time and challenge themselves to become something more. Personally, I love watching a band change over time. Scordatura has been throwing down death metal for almost twenty years now, and it’s here with their fourth album that we’re shown just how far they’ve come and how much they’ve evolved.
It’s really anybody’s guess where a band will take their sound as the years pile on. Some tune slightly to find something adjacent while others make wild turns into different genres entirely for one reason or another with the results of both varying from one band to the next, oftentimes seeing brutality fade away over the years. For others, however, shedding their intensity is anything but an option. Scordatura has been hard at work carving up the underground with their singularly uncompromising brand of death metal that could blot out the sun should the Glasgow act decide so, and it’s with their first album in six years that we get what’s likely the band’s most refined work to date. For the absolute entirety of “Led Into Oblivion”, there are many terms that can be applied to record but mercy is simply not one of them. From beginning to end, this is a creation that seeks to sear flesh and crush bone as it’s through immense riffs and a stupendous sense of heaviness that grinds you to little more than dust in the wind as Scordatura ensures through fine technicality and a spectacle sense of scale that you’ll just keep coming back for more.
Scordatura’s several years of experience is apparent in virtually every given minute of this creation. It’s only with time that this quartet has become more violent and more in tune with their oppressive craft with the ten tracks of “Led Into Oblivion” an unwavering declaration of the band’s dedication to their craft and how far they’ve challenged themselves to truly capitalize on all that the sound has to offer.
