I think it’s safe to say that when it comes to much of the underground of metal, there’s no shortage of bands that are looking to carve out a name for themselves. Thus, I’d argued it’s even safer to say that we are able to witness a vast number of bands come around and astonish us in ways that only the hungriest of names are able to accomplish. As such, there’s loads of ingenuity to go around. At any given time, there’s a laundry list of new names coming out of nowhere to catch us off-guard. We need only to be in the right place at the right time for such creations to work their magic on us. With its debut, Namu is a name rightfully on the lips of many.
Right away, it demands to be made clear that what Namu has thrown down here is anything but your run-of-the-mill piece of black metal. Rather, this is an ambitious work that dared to become so much more with the invocation of death metal obvious throughout the release with a supremely well done progressive aspect constantly and consistently elevating the record to become something more. “Wretched Spawns of Iniquitous Orders” is a labor of four years, and it shows in every single one of these seven tracks. Every single minute has something special to call its own with it being clear that Namu was never content in trodding the same sonic concept over and over again to make for a performance that’s stale or repetitive. Instead, this is a record that stands unbelievably tall with loads of magnificence to show off without so much as a moment of the record falling short or failing to live up to the grandeur that Namu had been carefully crafting just moments before. Each aspect about this work adds to the final glory. Whether it’s in the diverse set of vocals, the intermittent melody that keeps you crawling back for more, the expansive and rich atmospheres, the impeccable craftsmanship that adorns the whole of the record, or something else in the rich tapestry the record boasts, “Wretched Spawns of Iniquitous Orders” is the out-of-nowhere surprise that the underground is always in need of.
By all accounts, this record is bombastic from top to bottom. The sheer fact that this is but the debut record from Namu should only add to the astonishment factor that this record boasts with every other given element of the work just the cherry on top. Pound for pound, “Wretched Spawns of Iniquitous Orders” is a triumph of the highest degree. Four years were spent carefully crafting this piece and it shows in every possible moment.
