When you’ve been around for some time, it’s only natural that you begin to experiment and try new things. That’s a concept that we’ve seen plenty of bands tap into after they’ve been around for decades as that’s oftentimes the best way one can still pay reverence to the style they seek to perpetuate, keep their material sounding undeniable like their own, and ensure that their sound never becomes boring or recycled. Not many can deliver on all those fronts without shedding some semblance of their intensity, yet it is with their latest creation that Morgue Supplier manages to do all that and then some.
Normally, I’m admittedly not one that’s all that into grind or much of its closely related territories in that vast soundscape that metal holds dominion over, but, like many things, that is not a universal rule that is clad in stone. Every now and then, the sound offers something that I never could have expected and simply cannot help but investigate and fall into for how dense, interesting, and multi-dimensional the creation is. Morgue Supplier has been churning out maddening creations since before the turn of the century with plenty of activity showing off the band’s ingenuity and prowess alongside its raw ferocity, but there’s something about “Mastering the Disease” that feels different. Each of these nine tracks have an unmistakable identity that allows the record as a whole to not just feel as dynamic as it is dangerous, but it showcases to us time after time that Morgue Supplier has the tact and the capacity to twist their exceedingly brutal sound into something that can mesmerize the listener, lulling them into an induced state of vulnerability. Alongside all of that nearly insurmountable chaos, the raw craftsmanship of “Mastering the Disease” feels second to none. This is is a showcasing of peak intensity combined with the daring to twist your sound even further into something that we can not only sink our teeth into, but become completely obliterated by as the talent in question does its terrible work with efficiency and brutality on a scale the likes of which we rarely see.
Works such as this are few and far between for every possible reason. Grind is not often seen as a sound that can be nuanced, but when the right talent comes around in the right circumstances then anything can be possible. Without a doubt, the proper circumstances have aligned not just to show us that Morgue Supplier can still deliver but that it can still bewilder us and catch us unprepared. For everything offered throughout “Mastering the Disease”, it’s obvious that this is a name that still has so much more to offer and can summon what extremely few others can.
