Sometimes, the best kept secrets are those hidden in plain sight. While many of us are constantly seeking out new material from many of the well-established bastions like Scandinavia or America, there are plenty of other countries out there that are more than deserving of our attention. It’s something that I’ve loved to talk about many times over, and Chile has remained consistent whenever I cover such themes to the point where I can confidently say that the Chilean scene is magnificently underrated to the highest degree. As if to hammer that point home, it’s with their second album that Sepulcrum dominate and eviscerate.

Reverence, passion, and talent are the cornerstones of what make any performance something that we can really dig our teeth into for one reason or another as it’s in the right balance they can come together and offer us an experience that truly pull us in. The Chilean scene is littered with bands that are by no means looking to redefine what extreme metal can be simply because we find ourselves in a different corner of the world, but it’s through a undeniable understanding and intimacy with a respective sound that we get bands like Sepulcrum and albums like “Lacerator” that are a damn good time that also waste no time. A speedy performance that sees a healthy infusion of thrash into an otherwise undeniably visceral delivery of death metal, it is at damn near every given turn throughout the ten tracks of “Lacerator” that we witness Sepulcrum offer us a vision of death metal that many might consider lost to time, yet it is here that we get it in such a rich form. With tight songwriting and satisfying riffs that cascade into one another while Sepulcrum is always making time to tear the listener asunder one fiber at a time, we’re given a devastating listen that pulls from its influences in tremendous fashion.

Here, we’re granted a record that does not just illustrate their passion for the sound and their capability as artists, but something that shows us yet again magnificence can be found in what some would consider the least likely of places. “Lacerator” is as unforgiving as it is precise, and Sepulcrum would do well to heed the success and the mastery that they’ve ascertained with this record.
