Maidenhead – Maximum Clonage

In any other year, there would be at least a month even in the most fortunate of circumstances between two examples of anything interesting to come out of the realm of thrash metal and land right before me. Every year seems to be fortuitous in at least one genre in my experience. If last year saw folk metal come out in force, then 2026 may very well be the year for thrash. I’ve been treated to a litany of superb creations from the sound this year with Maidenhead but the latest to continue the welcome trend.

It would be an understatement to say that the fates of both thrash and death metal have been closely intertwined ever since the earliest days of the latter. Much of the classic material that many of us hearken back to and greatly revere are rooted incredibly deeply in the world of thrash which is something that is oftentimes forgotten when many people attempt to channel death metal from the earliest days of when the sound was still finding its own footing. Yet, for some bands such as Maidenhead, those transitional years where thrash was being twisted into death metal, that sound is downright pivotal with albums like “Maximum Clonage” doing their best to emulate those flavors while trying not to be an outright clone itself. Across these eight tracks, Maidenhead pull off a spectacular recreation of what can still happen when thrash and death metal intersect without compromise, leaving nothing on the table nor a survivor in sight. Crammed with several eviscerating riffs and so much power that is downright uncompromising, “Maximum Clonage” is efficient at what it does and looks damn good while doing it.

From the awesome vocals to the unyielding approach across the whole album, it’s obvious that Maidenhead knew precisely what they were doing with their first full-length album. “Maximum Clonage” delivers on damn near all fronts to offer us an experience of death-thrash that’s as merciless as it is enthralling.
