Nocturnal Lust – Ghosting

It’s a hard truth to come and respect, but every band comes to an end. Whether it be the band members simply want to move on, internal disagreements, personal reasons, a tragic passing, or a straight lack of interest, every band must hang up their strings and call it a day. Nocturnal Lust has been hard at work creating ambient instrumental doom since 2010, but they’ve recently decided to throw in the towel, but not without one last album that is all but incredibly flavorful.

I always value a band that is truly dedicated to their craft by releasing one album after another within a fairly short span of time of not even two years, and that’s something Nocturnal Lust has been known for in their own little corner of the underground where their niche sound has found the interest of a niche crowd. It’s only with their most recent, final album that they took a more “normal” amount of time to craft as it’s been four years since the album before “Ghosting”, but that doesn’t detract from the quality of this final act. Being completely instrumental, it might be hard to keep the attention of a listener, but Nocturnal Lust excels at the art of weaving dissonant ambiance whilst incorporating doom riffage and attitude into the overall mix that allows “Ghosting” to come and go with much more than a whimper. It’s all put together very well as Nocturnal Lust is always doing something a little bit new from one track to the next, the ambiance changing just often enough to not become stale, and the riffage to remain consistent yet not in your face that it’s more intricate musicianship can take center stage. “Ghosting” pulls it off all quite well despite the songs stopping and starting with no sort of “proper” entrance or exit as they come and go and the drop of a hat, but I’m willing to forgive given how intriguing the whole quality of the album itself.

Farewell albums are always difficult because you need to give the fans something to remember you by, and I’m confident that’s exactly the case with “Ghosting”. I wish I heard of Nocturnal Lust sooner as it’s the exact kind of niche sound that I’ve been looking for, and now I need to listen to their back catalog and catch up on what I’ve been missing. Even though I’ve only just found out about this duo, I’ll sorely miss them and their sound.
