I find myself enjoying thrash metal a lot more often when it’s paired together with something like black or death metal, or even punk. It just takes on a life that’s much more interesting to my ears in such a way that doesn’t feel repetitive in the most boring way without the band even really trying to do anything interesting. Peru’s Putrid refused to fall into such damnation as it’s with their upcoming album that they give us the most interesting form of thrash that I’ve heard since Vampiric.
Now, with all that above being said, it must be made clear that there really isn’t much done here throughout the blasphemous work that is “Antichrist Above” that does a whole lot to go out of its way to sound incredibly fresh or even set itself apart from the great vast majority of the many other blackened thrash acts we get out there, but it’s the quality of it all that makes Putrid stand out. It isn’t much for some people, but it’s far more than enough for someone like me who endlessly appreciates actually good shit that comes out the underground at any time from anywhere, and it’s in every track throughout the fiery depths that is “Antichrist Above” that show us this band is not to be fucked with. We do see in one instance that Putrid is more than capable of switching up their sound to give us something much slower and venomous that’s a great contrast to their blistering speed and all-consuming hellfire that’s almost always raging, but there’s no denying here that in both instances Putrid manages to deliver the goods without breaking a sweat as they give us a damn good peer into their brand of darkness one song at a time. It comes together quite nicely to make for a listen that many of us have heard before on many occasions, but it’s here that “Antichrist Above” shows us that Putrid is able to be a little more than run-of-the-mill, and it’s just enough for them to stand out at great lengths.
Such works like these can really feel like they’re a dime a dozen given how some bands put them out and there’s just no real meat to them as they feel slapped together and rushed in order to have a release. But Putrid expertly dodges such a fate here with these ten tracks proving to us they’re much more than another band that has nothing them whatsoever, and it’s “Antichrist Above” that continuously proves that from one song to the next.
