Ever since my discovery of the ever-classy Black Space Riders a few years ago, I’ve been very interested in investigating more into the world of space rock. I’ve always been into almost all things groovy and psychedelic in the world of rock, but it’s with space rock that I just somehow never got around to checking out for one reason or another. But it’s with Aver that I’ve finally broken that dry spell, and they’ve delivered in no less than splendid fashion.
When it comes down to it, I’m more predisposed to like material labeled as “psychedelic” material that’s filled to the brim with riffs and then having that chalice overflow because of the thirst-quenching levels of psychedelia that are brought in to make the experience just so much better. But, I understand that different bands take different approaches and I’ve always been more than happy to have my mind changed. Space rock has always had those in exemplary fashion, so I dove head first into Aver’s upcoming record with expectations high. While “Orbis Majora” didn’t meet all of my expectations when it comes down to the executions, these five tracks more than made up for it with quality. Featuring three tracks clocking over ten minutes, this record has a beautiful sense of balance that Aver represents in top fashion as they masterful weave from groove to groove bringing along just the right amount of psychedelia to keep things interesting but they also aren’t afraid to spice up “Orbis Majora” by increasing the intensity just a little bit with some slight grunge flair. That alone brings “Orbis Majora” to another level that many other bands tend to lack and ultimately makes the sound that Aver brings to the table feel so much more dynamic and interesting which in the end made these five tracks all the more engaging, entertaining, and something that you can really sink into.
There are many times that bands try to mix together very different flavors to create something new, and sometimes it works. Other times, however, it falls flat and the material in question feels like a mess, but luckily, Aver does nothing but success with this record. In every form, “Orbis Majora” is a space rock album that is still firmly steeped in the foundations of the style but also one that’s far from afraid to explore and create new sounds, and that’s something that Aver is clearly adept at.
