Just when you think you’ve already come before a group that has exceeded your expectations, it feels like a truly divine reward to see them come back in such a form that feels somehow larger than before with power and presence undeniable. The underground is a place full of surprises, yet there are few acts that can compare to anything what like the many entities of the collective known as Jünger Tumilon can deliver with Death. Void. Terror. in particular giving us nothing but a masterclass in otherworldly metal this year. It was just weeks ago that they released an EP, but it’s now with an immediate full-length follow-up that we’re reminded as to the magnitude of the band we’re dealing with here.
It was no secret with the release of “To the Great Monolith 2.5” that something else would follow swiftly after it’s release, but I don’t think many of us could have quite expected what was to come with all that’s to be found throughout the vastness that “To the Great Monolith III: Rifts” commands. Already, these different acts of Jünger Tumilon have proven to be quite capable in all that they dare to craft, and it is yet again with this new effort that this iteration of Death. Void. Terror. showcases a level of understanding, mastery, and uncompromising depth that separately are intimdating enough, but when brought together are nigh on compelling from beginning to end. If it was the previous EP that was the appetizer for what was to come, then “To The Great Monolith III: Rifts” is the five-course meal rich with flavor and a creation that just keeps on giving.
A record like this is where genre definitions begin to blur into mere concepts where the bold artistry of the band in question take the reins to lead the listener to a realm that only the creators can access. This record is nothing if not five years of metamorphosis made manifest. What’s been created here is no less than the most transformative work from Death. Void. Terror. to date with it almost assuredly one of the most engrossing works that 2026 will see by the time it closes. Ritualistic black metal that more than dabbles in the realms of death metal, doom, and even a tinge of occult rock, this record explores many different territories sonically, thematically, and metaphysically.
As the album expands, so too does our understanding of a realm beyond our own where the orthodox is actively parodied into something that can be seen as grotesque and unsightly. Yet, I beg you to give into the seductions of the work and its nuances, for it is in between the spaces of the “To the Great Monolith III” that the eponymous rifts open before your eyes and you’re tempted through the threshold. Beyond, anything feels possible even as Death. Void. Terror. continue to influence your mind, body, and soul; your entire being sways to the will of this compelling performance.
Should you want to experience what is likely the quintessential ritualistic experience that the underground has to offer in 2026, then you simply cannot go wrong with Death. Void. Terror.. It’s fitting that this would be the band to deliver it, really. After hibernating for six years and returning to us in no less than bombastic and overwhelming fashion, this is a new height for the band the likes of which will be very difficult to surmount in the future. Yet, I have nothing but confidence that this act can do it. The musicians behind this piece knew what they were doing every step of the way with it all culminating in “To the Great Monolith III: Rifts” becoming something that demands to be experienced.
