Jehovah on Death – Lágrimas de Oro

It’s been far too long since we’ve been offered a body of work that well and truly puts the occult back into occult rock. I don’t mean something that merely dabbles in the concept of darkness or offers us barely more than a few riffs while spouting something about witchcraft here and there. I’m talking about the stuff that parents were terrified of in the midst of the Satanic Panic where every note, every lyric, and every creation was thought to be designed with some nefarious purpose in mind to corrupt their supposedly innocent children. Not often enough are we given an effort that taps into such possibility, but it was only a matter of time before we got an effort from an auspicious name that capitalizes on such raw potential. For all intents and purposes, that’s what Jehovah on Death offers us throughout their spectacular new album!

Let’s get it out of the way right now – this is anything but Ghost. Without a doubt in my mind, Jehovah on Death is the absolute real deal. With no compromising or skimping when it comes to bringing their unique vision to life that feels like the final boss of all that occult rock has been building towards over time, it’s the utter entirety of “Lágrimas de Oro” that not only tickles that side of the soul that’s always tempted towards darkness but offers us seduction and splendor of a sort that only the most devilish of creations could ever hope to pull off to such magnificent effect. While the riffs and melodies are more than enough to keep our attention, I don’t think there’s so much as a single aspect of this record that wasn’t executed to the maximum from the cover art to the very mixing. Constantly is the dark magic of this record calling you back, waiting to caress you in the most sublime rock that this corner of the underground has offered us in several years. Jehovah on Death pulls greatly from concepts born of both Spanish Catholicism and medieval practices to make “Lágrimas de Oro” a supremely multi-dimensional creation that is never once content to sit in one place for too long lest their spellbinding craft overstay its welcome and its intensity fade away. This is occult rock as it was always destined to become. Without missing a single opportunity to show us what they’re made of from beginning to end, Jehovah on Death is the intoxicating ride through death, love, Satan, and beyond that we never knew we were missing.

There is an enchantment about this very record that is impossible to pin down but downright irresistible. I defy anyone who could come into this record and not find themselves absolutely enamored by all that this record has to offer. Not only is “Lágrimas de Oro” one of the best pieces that the genre has put before me in several years, but it is almost assuredly destined to be hailed as one of the most electrifying works that 2026 will offer us. Unlike the vast swathe of its competition, Jehovah on Death is an entity we must not take lightly.
