Organ – Immobilism

A fierce presence is what many strive for throughout the underground as we find ourselves drowning in a sound that is nothing if not aggressive. It’s what throngs of bands put their asses into in order to not just bring their art to life in a genuine form but demonstrate to listeners the power that’s at play when they find themselves before such talent. As such, there are many different ways to channel your ferocity. For some, that’s an all-out assault that is constantly going for the throat. Others offer it in a more calculated but nonetheless intense form. In the case of bands like Organ, it’s a voiceless but unapologetically foreboding experience that elicits terror and dread on every level.

It can be all too easy to go for an approach that is an absolute wall of sound and menace, but it still requires finesse and knowledge of your craft for such a creation to not come off as some one-dimensional piece that is little more than a flat attempt at something far more. There are many styles out there in the world of metal that are well-suited for such a thing with doom always being a great candidate, and Organ clearly understood that. However, it’s with the infusion of post metal into their sound alongside an instrumental approach that it’s made very clear very quickly throughout their second piece, “Immobilism”, that Organ showcases power, presence, and perseverance in a way that is oppressive to the flesh yet darkly captivating to the soul. Across a cacophonous 39-minute runtime, “Immobilism” wastes no time in whittling down the listener to their base aspects. Between thick distorted riffs and an execution that is simply unrelenting even in the work’s smallest moments, Organ sought to create something that is dramatic and downright sinister without ever once sacrificing all that for a soundscape that is impenetrable to those not ready for such an experience. Where many in the world of post-doom might seek to offer listeners some sort of atmosphere as reprieve from the heaviness, at no point here does Organ offer that kind of mercy. Perpetually going all-in and ensuring the listener is little more than a red paste on the ground when “Immobilism” comes to a close, there’s power undeniable in every inch of this record.

While peace and awe might have some place in the greater spectrum of this genre, they have no home throughout “Immobilism”. Organ has crafted a tremendous work that attack the whole of your being without compromise nor mercy to ensure that the record is not just a voracious powerhouse of intensity, but something that lingers with you well after it comes to a close.
