It ought to go without saying that death metal has remained incredibly strong over the years with all sorts of bands continuously coming out of the woodwork from all over the globe to show us how far the genre can still be pushed even after decades of madness and terror. As such, we’re still treated to a vast menagerie of bands out there that are seeking to offer their own chaos into the fray with there always being a select few more than worth talking about. Leper Colony has proven itself to be such a name and continues to prove such with their new album despite putting out their previous just last year.
Leper Colony is one of those bands that could well and truly serve as an embodiment of old school death metal. The old school has seen an overwhelming amount of support and reverence as time has gone on, and rightfully so, but it’s not nearly often enough that we’re given a band that can emulate those flavors without compromising their own personality for any reason. Since their debut, Leper Colony has been a force to reckon with as the immense experience of its members more than equipped this act for success right out of the gate, yet it is somehow with everything delivered throughout their third opus of slaughter, “Back to Primal Sludge”, that we see Leper Colony in arguably its deadliest form to date. Furthering their exaltation for both Floridian and Swedish death metal, Leper Colony eviscerates at every possible turn throughout these nine tracks of unending depravity. While always ensuring they keep the line back to their influences intact, it demands to be made clear that “Back to Primal Sludge” is a ferocious body of work that’s more than sturdy enough to not just stand on its own two feet, but keep you enthralled by the brutality on constant display. Riffs abound and more than enough proficiency in the craft to root you in place and force you to become an addict of this intoxicating breed of undeath, the whole of “Back to Primal Sludge” is not something to take lightly.
By all accounts, death metal is a well-populated style that has more than enough talent and intrigue to keep us interested time and time again without fail nor any shortage of greatness to keep us coming back for more. Leper Colony more than deserves to be hailed as one of the finest examples of such. Time has done great things for each of these musicians with the continuation of Leper Colony showing us that they have so much more to throw down than we could have dared anticipated when they first came onto the scene. “Back to Primal Sludge” is a testament to the brutality that we’re dealing with here, and a promise of evisceration the likes of which we aren’t treated to in such a pristine form often whatsoever.
