To be weird and off-kilter is to try for something that hardly anyone else can ever hope to bring to the table, and that requires just as much vision and daring as it does talent and passion in order to be brought to life in a way that feels as though the concepts are given true justice. As such, honest iterations of a band doing its own thing are truly few and far between. Even then, there are a select few in that already exclusive group that embrace it far more than others. Defect Designer has made a name for itself as a band that does anything other than the expected, but it’s with their new upcoming album that they’ve taken even their crazy brand of progressive death metal to an extreme extent.
Even in its more recent creations, Defect Designer has become one of the few entities in progressive death metal that has learned to embrace their more experimental aspects with time only seeing the act delve further into uncharted territory. Their efforts have been very respectable and widely lauded for all the right reasons, yet, even when taking into consideration previous efforts like “Chitin” and “Neanderthal”, there’s more than a little something about the vast breadth of “Depressants” that feels as though Defect Designer has gone off the deep end without ever losing so much as a single iota of their immense power. Singularly unpredictable in its kaleidoscopic offensives, it’s through a fascinating use of intense groove and evocative soundscapes that these thirteen tracks are driven by songwriting that feels downright schizophrenic yet undeniably alluring for what they offer the listener. Every track has its own uncompromising identity without exception as Defect Designer twists their already deeply mutated brand of death metal into something immeasurably fascinating right from the get-go, quickly allowing the record to not just take on a life of its own but show us in grand detail how far Defect Designer has come.
Already, this act was a need-to-know name in the world of progressive death metal, yet it’s “Depressants” that sees the act take the next step into the amorphous and unknowable with the results simply sensational. This isn’t just what it means to watch a band try something different; this is a demonstration of true masters of their craft doing what they will as they will with nothing stopping them but the limits of their imagination and the barriers of their own flesh. “Depressants” is anything but a typical record that’s meant for the layman, but it’s a listen that’s littered with rewards for those willing to explore what Defect Designer has accomplished here.
